NURSE MIDWIFE

A nurse who holds a certificate to practice as a nurse -midwife at all times shall practice nurse midwifery under the direction and supervision of a doctor of medicine or doctor of osteopathic medicine. ORC § 4723.43

No nurse-midwife shall perform version, treat breech or face presentation, do any obstetric operation requiring instruments, or treat any other abnormal condition, except in emergencies. ORC § 4723.43

A registered nurse licensed in Ohio who has graduated from a school or college for nurse midwives, in good standing, and has passed the American College of Nurse Midwives examination for certification is eligible to be certified by the Board of Nursing to practice midwifery. ORC § 4723.42

"The governing body of any hospital that is licensed to provide maternity services, in considering and acting upon applications for clinical privileges, shall not discriminate against a qualified person solely on the basis that the person is certified to practice nurse-midwifery. An application from a nurse midwife shall contain the name of a physician member of the hospital's medical staff who holds clinical privileges in obstetrics at that hospital and who has agreed to direct and supervise the applicant in accordance with section 4723.43 of the Revised Code." ORC § 3701.351 (C)
