Athletic Trainers, Scope of
Practice
To qualify for an athletic trainer’s license, a person shall:
- Have satisfactorily completed an application for licensure in accordance
with rules adopted by the athletic trainers section of the Ohio occupational
therapy, physical therapy and athletic trainers board;
- Have paid the examination fee required under this section;
- Be a resident of the state or perform substantial athletic training
within the state;
- Be of good moral character;
- Have shown to the satisfaction of the athletic trainers section of the
board that he or she has received a baccalaureate or higher degree from an
institution of higher education, approved by the athletic trainers section of
the board and their federal regional accreditation agency and recognized by the
council of post secondary accreditation, and has completed a program that meets
the academic standards for athletic trainers established by the national
athletic trainers association, inc., at a minimum, the program shall include
courses in anatomy, physiology, physiology of exercise, applied anatomy and
kinesiology, psychology (two courses), first aid and cardiopulmonary
resuscitation, nutrition, remedial exercise, personal, community and school
health which may include drug and alcohol abuse coursed, techniques of athletic
training and advanced techniques of athletic training.
- In addition to the course work requirements, applicants must have
completed eight hundred hours of supervised clinical experience over a minimum
of a two-year period; and
- Have passed an examination adopted by the athletic trainers’ section of
the board. Each applicant for licensure shall pay a non-refundable examination fee
set by the athletic trainers’ section.

An “athletic trainer” is a person who meets the qualifications of
licensure and who is employed by an educational institution, professional or
amateur organization, athletic facility or health care facility to practice
athletic training.
ORC § 4755.60 (B)
“Athletic training” is the practice of
prevention, recognition, assessment, management, treatment, disposition and
reconditioning of acute athletic injuries upon the referral of a health care
practitioner, a dentist, a physical therapist or a chiropractor. Athletic training
also includes the organization and administration of educational programs and athletic
facilities, and the education of and consulting with the public as it pertains to
athletic training.
