Occupational
Therapist,
Scope of
Practice
“Occupational therapy” is the evaluation of learning and performance
skills and the analysis, selection and adaptation of activities for an
individual whose abilities to cope with daily living, perform tasks normally
performed at his or her stage of development and perform vocational tasks are
threatened or impaired by developmental deficiencies, the aging process,
environmental deprivation or physical, psychological or social injury or
illness, through specific techniques that include:
- Planning and implementing activities and programs to improve sensory
and motor functioning at the level of performance normal for the
individual’s stage of development;
- Teaching skills, behaviors and attitudes crucial to the individual’s
independent, productive and satisfying social functioning;
- Designing, fabricating, applying, recommending and instructing in the
use of selected orthotic or prosthetic devices and other equipment which
assists the individual to adapt to his or her potential or actual impairment;
and
- Analyzing, selecting and adapting activities to maintain the
individual’s optimal performance or tasks and to prevent further disability.

Licensure as an occupational therapist or as an occupational therapy
assistant requires an applicant to demonstrate that he or she:
- Is of good moral character:
- Has successfully completed the academic requirements of an educational
program concentrating in basic human sciences, the human development process,
occupational tasks and activities, the health-illness continuum and
occupational therapy theory and practice;
- Has successfully completed a period of supervised field work experience
at a recognized educational institution or a training program.
For an occupational therapist, a minimum of six (6) months of
supervised field work experience is required.
For an occupational therapy assistant, a minimum of two months of
supervised field work experience is required; and
- Has successfully passed a written examination testing his or her
knowledge of the basic and clinical sciences relating to occupational therapy
and occupational therapy theory and practice. ORC
